Liya Zaurbekova, who escaped from her family, claims that her relatives beat her friend

Liya Zaurbekova, a native of Chechnya, said that policemen in Moscow did not try to help her before her lawyer arrived and even sent her outside to talk to her relatives who were waiting outside the building. According to the girl’s version, her relatives used force against her and her friend, and only after that the police took the girl and the young man back to the department.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Liya Zaurbekova, who fled from her relatives, left the country and was safe, as her lawyer reported on May 17. Liya Zaurbekova asked not to look for her and stated that she feared a forced return to her family.

In a video message, released by the Telegram channel of the “Marem” human rights group, Liya Zaurbekova said that at the police department, she was accompanied by young man Artyom and claimed that her relatives beat him while the police did not interfere. Liya Zaurbekova explained that she got acquainted with Artyom in December and that they had a “trusting relationship.”

The girl complained that her relatives were threatening Artyom “right in front of the policemen, who said that they had allegedly not heard or noticed anything.”

Liya Zaurbekova said that she filed a complaint to the police stating that she was an adult and did not want to intersect with her family. However, she and the young man were “simply let go by the police, although a crowd was waiting on the street,” with advice to “talk to the relatives.”

The girl noted that she felt very sad to leave the country “without the possibility to return back.” Liya Zaurbekova claimed that in her family she experienced assault, total control, and threats that if she expresses even slightest disobedience, they would take her “back to the village to Chechnya.” In addition, the girl claimed she was told that she needed no education to get married.

A father of Liya Zaurbekova said that “nobody let her go” and voiced threats against the young man, as reported in her Telegram channel Marina Akhmedova, a member of the Human Rights Council under the President of Russia. The girl’s father sees only one way out: the young man must convert to Islam. Otherwise, the daughter will face punishment.
