Rights defenders state doctors' non-admittance to Saakashvili

The prison administration has refused a council of doctors to visit Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili, an ex-president of Georgia, the NGO "Empathy Centre for Psychological Rehabilitation of Torture Victims" has informed. In Tbilisi, protesters demanded to let Saakashvili to go abroad for medical treatment.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 27, doctors diagnosed Saakashvili with anorexia amid post-stress depression. His supporters demanded to transfer him to a foreign clinic. In its turn, the Georgian Ministry of Justice has stated that false information is being spread about Saakashvili's health condition. On May 3, in Tbilisi, protesters demanded a meeting with the US Ambassador in order to ask him to help in setting Saakashvili free.

On May 4, the council of doctors, convened at the request of Saakashvili's defence by the above "Empathy" Centre, was not allowed to visit the ex-president, Mariam Djishkariani, the head of the NGO, has stated.

Shota Tutberidze, Saakashvili's advocate, said that his client's temperature did not subside and his weakness has increased.

On May 4, several dozen people held an action near the residence of the Georgian President, Salome Zurabishvili, demanding to transfer Saakashvili to a foreign clinic for medical treatment. They have stated that curing Saakashvili in Georgia is impossible. We need society's consolidation in order to put pressure on authorities, Nika Parulava, an activist, has noted.
