Film director Sokurov refuses to continue dispute with Kadyrov

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov accused film director Alexander Sokurov of trying to “destroy Russia from the inside.” The film director did not comment on the accusations against him. Alexander Sokurov considers the question of speaking at a meeting with the Russian President settled.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on December 9, President Vladimir Putin and film director Alexander Sokurov argued at a meeting of the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights. The Russian President reacted sharply to the statement of Alexander Sokurov about alleged separatist sentiments among residents of Northern Caucasus and the proposal to release the participants of the protests against the agreement on the Chechen-Ingush border. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov intervened in the dispute in absentia and condemned the film director for speaking out about the possibility of allowing some regions of Northern Caucasus to secede from Russia. Ramzan Kadyrov also called on to check the Alexander Sokurov’s proposal for extremism. On December 16, Alexander Sokurov reported that he had received warnings about the threat to his life, along with offensive statements coming from Chechnya.

In Chechnya, at the Ramzan Kadyrov’s suggestion, there is a wave of harsh criticism against Alexander Sokurov for his statement about separatist sentiments among residents of Northern Caucasus. Ramzan Kadyrov urged to check the Alexander Sokurov’s words for extremism, and Magomed Daudov, the speaker of the Chechen parliament, noted that the film director’s statement was aimed at inciting enmity between peoples.

Alexander Sokurov seeks to destroy Russia from the inside, Ramzan Kadyrov states.

“Alexander Sokurov is from that group of people who are trying to destroy our country from the inside. He knows how delicate the issue about the Caucasus is and how much Russia needs the Caucasus,” Ramzan Kadyrov declared.
