South-Ossetia policeman arrested for torturing detainees

A court in Tskhinvali has ruled to detain Atsamaz Naniev, a policeman, as a suspect in the case of torturing detainees; it was done after the attempt on the life of the head of the South-Ossetian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the death of Inal Djabiev, a resident of South Ossetia, detained within the case of an attempt on Igor Naniev, the MIA head, resulted in the dismissal of Naniev himself. Half of South-Ossetian MPs announced a boycott of their work until the resignation of Uruzmag Djagaev, the Public Prosecutor General, to whom the parliament announced a vote of distrust.

Inal Djabiev died on August 28. Photos with traces of severe beatings on his body appeared on the Internet. On August 29, sources reported about the torture of two other detainees within the case of the attempted murder of the minister – Nikolai Tskhovrebov and Gennady Kulaev.

Let us remind you that on the day of Djabiev's death, hundreds of South-Ossetian residents rallied and demanded resignation of the government and the head of the republic. Then, the Prime Minister, Erik Pukhaev, resigned, followed by the entire government. Djabiev's funeral on August 31 turned into a crowded procession.
