UN: situation in Chechnya 'is not armed conflict'

The United Nations has admitted that the situation in Chechnya "is not an armed conflict" in its international legal interpretation. The United Nations met Russia's request to change the wording in the report on the involvement of children in hostilities in Chechnya. There is another description of the situation in Chechnya in the corrected text, only "illegal armed units" are mentioned in it now.

The Russian party made the above-mentioned request after the similar report on the situation in Northern Ireland had been corrected at the instance of Great Britain in February 2004.

In addition to Chechnya and Northern Ireland, the following countries are in the UN list of regions where children are involved in hostilities: Afghanistan, Burundi, Colombia, the Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Uganda.
