In Armenia, Women's Support Centre demands to review law on domestic violence

In Armenia, organizations-members of the coalition "Combating Violence against Women" demand to adopt a law on domestic violence as a whole package, not dividing it into parts concerning physical, economic and psychological violence. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Asmik Gevorgyan, an employee of the Women's Support Centre.

"The law provides criminal liability for physical violence, administrative liability for economic violence and does not even consider psychological violence. Therefore, the package should be adopted in the whole," Asmik Gevorgyan has explained.

According to the activist, in case if the law on domestic violence is adopted according to the draft law, it will involve asylums both for abused women and men. Besides, the draft law also provides development of mechanisms to treat a very abuser.

In 2013, according to the Armenian Police, four women died as a result of domestic violence. According to Asmik Gevorgyan, in 2012, according to official figures, five such fatal cases of domestic violence were reported.
