Green actions against realization of D-6 project in Kaliningrad Region

Thursday, September 11, is a day when the actions of solidarity of NGOs in different Russian cities with the campaign of the Group "Ekozazhita!" in defense of the national park "Kurshskaya Kosa" (Kaliningrad Region) start. In the opinion of Kaliningrad ecologists, the unique object of natural heritage is under threat due to LUKOIL Company's plans on starting oil production in the Baltic Sea at the D-6 oilfield situated in immediate proximity to the park.

As it was reported at the Group "Ekozazhita!", the actions of protest, as well as informational actions will take place in Voronezh, Vladimir, Yekaterinburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, Oryol, Rostov-on-Don, Ryazan. On September 12-13 activists of about 40 Russian public organizations from Sakhalin to Kaliningrad are gathering at an international conference to express protest to LUKOIL and mould a claim against the Russian government that granted permission for the dangerous project to this company.

Another reason for the actions of solidarity to be organized is providing support to the activists of "Ekozhshita!", who are under unexampled pressure of LUKOIL Company in Kaliningrad. According to the words of the ecologists, the mass media that are in LUKOIL's possession have been carrying on a campaign drive for their discredit for over a year.

A number of European countries, as well as the UNESCO are already alarmed at the D-6 project.
