Pashinyan commented on the demands of Vardashen residents

The authorities are not obliged to provide housing for residents of emergency houses in the Vardashen quarter, as their property is worth nothing on the market, said the Prime Minister of Armenia.

"Caucasian Knot" reported that on August 20, two dormitory buildings in Vardashen organized a protest near the Armenian government building. They demanded the immediate evacuation of residents from emergency buildings and the provision of apartments. "Pashinyan, come down!" - chanted the participants of the action. One participant was detained, and his mother required medical assistance.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan commented at a briefing on August 20 regarding the demands of the protesting residents of Vardashen. According to Pashinyan, residents of emergency dormitories will not be provided with improved housing in the capital.

“The state has no obligations to these people, and the market value of this property is zero. In return, we offer 7 million drams. There are places in the republic where you can buy property or secure housing for 7 million drams,” the news agency “News Armenia” quotes him as saying.

The dormitory in question has been recognized as emergency since 2021. The entrances of its two buildings lack both railings and doors, the walls are affected by mold, and the sewage system is malfunctioning, writes Yerevan Today.

According to one of the protest participants, about 180 families live in the two emergency buildings. Residents stated that they intend to continue demanding the provision of apartments, reports Armenia Today.

Another protest participant stated that before the elections, the authorities promised to provide them with housing. “But now they decided to give a small amount - 7.8 million drams (about 21.6 thousand dollars), so that people could buy housing themselves. For these 7 million, you can't even buy five square meters. In non-emergency dormitories, rooms of 12 square meters cost 35-40 thousand dollars, and apartments start from 80-90 thousand dollars,” quotes the protester “Voice of Armenia.”
