The house of Tsukhinval resident Nina Komarova was destroyed during the hostilities in 2008. Since then, the house has not been restored. Komarova appealed to the acting president of South Ossetia, Marat Kambolov, asking to complete the restoration of the house.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", during the August conflict of 2008 in South Ossetia, about 3,500 houses were damaged. After the end of hostilities, the authorities of the republic, with the help of Russian funds, began restoring damaged housing and constructing new ones. In particular, new neighborhoods "Moscow" and "Sunny" were built in Tsukhinval.

All these years, the Komarov family lived in the damaged house. During this time, they gradually bought building materials to start restoring the house themselves.

In 2021, during the presidency of Anatoly Bibilov, the Komarov family finally began to have a house built, but it was not completed. For a time, the family was allocated a one-room apartment from the maneuvering fund. Only their belongings fit in it; they had nowhere else to put them when they had to urgently vacate the house before demolition. The house was demolished in November 2021, and by December of the same year, only the walls of the first floor had been erected. Construction stopped at that point.

Throughout the four years of Alan Gagloev's presidency, Komarova did not receive responses to numerous letters and appeals. In the only response she managed to obtain through the president's public reception, it was stated that the process of restoring the housing destroyed in 2008 was completed in 2012.

"If the state took on obligations, it should fulfill them, right? But it turns out that they demolished our house and left us at the broken trough. We have no other housing anywhere - neither here in the republic nor outside it. We simply have nowhere to go," she says.

Komarova recounts that immediately after the change of power, everyone around persistently advised her to contact the new authorities, which she did.

Nina's brother Andrei lives in a temporary structure in the yard of the unfinished house. She herself lives with friends. "My brother has been on the waiting list for housing since 2017; he fought in 2008. Over all these years, his turn has not only not approached, but he is dropping lower on the list. They say people are reinstated in their places in line through the courts," she said.

Tsukhinval resident Anna shares her story. In 2008, her grandparents' house in the village of Tbet was practically destroyed by shell fragments.

It was necessary to be assertive and demanding; otherwise, no one cares about you.

"Although no one lives there, we always went there and stayed. In 2008, we were told that yes, the house was destroyed by the war, it would be demolished and a new one would be built. But it remained as it was. We somehow replaced the roof so that it wouldn't completely rot, but living there now is impossible. Now I think our mistake was that we didn't go every day and 'shake' those who were dealing with all this. It was necessary to be assertive and demanding; otherwise, no one cares about you," Anna says.

Inara Gabaraeva, whose house was also destroyed in 2008, then headed a new public organization "Fund for Citizens of the RSO Left Without Property - 'Renaissance 2008'," which everyone simply called the 'fire victims' committee'.

She told a correspondent of "Caucasian Knot" that after the organization ceased operations in 2010, no one monitored the situation anymore, and the organization has no official data; however, Gabaraeva recalls several houses in Tsukhinval and villages that remain unrepaired.

"No one even checked them; perhaps people themselves got tired of appealing to officials. There is an unrepaired house on Kolkhoznaya Street, it belongs to the Pliev family. There are houses in the villages of Itrapiss, Tbet, Dzaou that remain unrepaired," she said.

Hostilities between Georgia and South Ossetia began on August 8, 2008. Russia soon intervened in the conflict. The hostilities lasted five days. After that, Russia announced that the operation to compel Georgia to peace was over. On August 26, the president of Russia signed decrees recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
