As reported by "Caucasian Knot", on July 7, the court arrested the leader of the opposition party "Prosperous Armenia", billionaire Gagik Tsarukyan, for two months, accused of fraud and tax evasion. The defense stated that there are documents proving that Tsarukyan is a victim in this case, and appealed his arrest.

Supporters gathered outside the committee building greeted Tsarukyan with applause and chanted: "Tsarukyan!" and "Freedom!" Police forces have been deployed to the Investigative Committee, reports Armenia Today.

Deputy Tigran Abrahamyan expressed outrage at the closure of Tsarukyan's businesses outside the Investigative Committee.

"The authorities are completely uninterested in whether a person works or not, whether he brings money to his family. The past eight years have shown that they have one goal — to hold onto power for as long as possible, and for that, they take any steps," the publication quotes him.

This is a signal to the public that dissent can lead to arrest. The authorities are creating a field for their further activities.

Attacks on Tsarukyan and "Prosperous Armenia" occurred in several stages: quite aggressively during the election campaign, they took away votes, illegally prevented them from entering parliament, and now, alongside political attacks on the leader, there is a redistribution of property.

"This is happening amid the silence of international organizations. In political and economic terms, this is a serious signal for investors. It is obvious to everyone that there could be a situation where the authorities can seize property or create obstacles for activities. For the public, this is a signal that dissent can lead to arrest. The authorities are creating a field for their further activities," News.Am quoted him as saying.

What is happening in Armenia has nothing to do with legal processes; the Constitution is violated daily in the country, said the representative of "Prosperous Armenia" Elinar Vardanyan.

"We all saw how during the election period, Nikol Pashinyan stated his intention to take everything from Gagik Tsarukyan, which was a direct instruction to law enforcement. Not only is the case fabricated, but the investigation is also proceeding with violations of the law. Lawlessness," Vardanyan stated.

Employees of Tsarukyan's enterprises are seeking to resume work.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated in May, during the election campaign, that the "Araratcement" plant would be nationalized. The prosecutor's office later reported a case regarding violations during the privatization of the enterprise and filed a lawsuit in court demanding the annulment of the privatization of the "Araratcement" enterprise. On July 9, the workers of "Araratcement" managed to reopen the sealed enterprise, while Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan threatened them with dismissal for participating in protests, and a few days later, the Anti-Corruption Court transferred the "Araratcement" company to state management.

The prosecutor's office is also demanding the confiscation of other assets of the businessman. Other enterprises of the head of "Prosperous Armenia", Gagik Tsarukyan, have not resumed work after his arrest. On July 13, 14, and 15, their employees held protests, stating that they risked being left without means of livelihood. The building of Gagik Tsarukyan's sports complex "Multi Sport" has completely passed into the ownership of the Yerevan municipality.
