The Supreme Court of Russia upheld the sentence of Abdulmumin Gadzhiev, Kemal Tambiev, and Abubakar Rizvanov.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", the editor of the religion section of the Dagestani newspaper "Chernovik", Abdulmumin Gadzhiev, was arrested in June 2019 on charges of financing terrorism. On September 12, 2023, the court sentenced Gadzhiev to 17 years in prison. The prosecution did not present convincing evidence in court, the defendant stated. On February 7, 2025, it became known that the European Court of Human Rights awarded Abdulmumin Gadzhiev compensation of 6000 euros for violations of his rights after his detention. The editorial office of the Dagestani newspaper "Chernovik" continues to consider Abdulmumin Gadzhiev innocent, his colleagues reminded on the seventh anniversary of his detention.

On July 8, "Chernovik" reported, citing a record on the court's website, about the consideration of the cassation appeal against the sentence of Abdulmumin Gadzhiev, Kemal Tambiev, and Abubakar Rizvanov.

According to the case card, the sentence was appealed in cassation on June 1, and the hearing was scheduled for July 8. There is no information about its results on the court's website.

Abdulmumin Gadzhiev's son also reported in his Telegram channel that the sentence was upheld.

It should be noted that, according to the investigation, Gadzhiev transferred money to the accounts of the preacher Abu Umar Sasitlinsky's funds. The investigation considers the preacher himself to be the organizer of financing terrorists through charitable foundations under the pretext of building mosques and helping low-income Muslims.

Investigators and prosecutors found in Gadzhiev's articles "the dissemination among the population of ideas about the necessity of separating the republics of the North Caucasus Federal District and establishing norms of Sharia rule in this territory", attempts "to influence people's consciousness to attract them to participate in the activities of a terrorist organization", and persuading "readers of the necessity to abandon a secular lifestyle" for their further moral and spiritual preparation for the necessity and determination to create a theocratic state, including by violent means.

Picketers in support of Gadzhiev have been held regularly since June 2019, when the journalist was detained. According to colleagues, Gadzhiev suffers because the newspaper raised "inconvenient questions" to the authorities and security forces. Actions in support of Gadzhiev took place not only in Makhachkala but also in other cities of Russia and abroad, and online support actions were also held - on social networks under the hashtags #FreedomToAbdulmumin and #FreedomToAbdulmuminGadzhiev, under which "you can find several thousand publications", the "Caucasian Knot" report states "Chernovik": threats, criminal cases, the murder of the editor-in-chief".
