Peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia have led to a lull on the border between the two countries.

The irrecoverable losses of the Azerbaijani armed forces in the first two months of 2026 amounted to eight personnel, all of them non-combat deaths.

As reported by the Caucasian Knot, according to the Caspian Institute of Military Studies, in 2025, losses in the Azerbaijani defense and security sector amounted to 42 personnel, all of them non-combat deaths.

The Caspian Institute of Military Studies (CDSI) began operations in February 2015 in Germany. One of its founders was Jasur Sumerinli, who headed the Doctrine Center for Journalistic Military Research until his departure from Azerbaijan in 2014.

On March 4, the CDSI published a report on the losses of the Azerbaijani defense and security sector in January-February 2026. The report was compiled based on information from official agencies, media and social media reports, and information from relatives of the deceased.

Azerbaijan's losses in the past two months amounted to eight service members, all of whom died in non-combat situations, CDSI Director Jasur Sumerinli told a Caucasian Knot correspondent.

According to the report, during the reporting period, two service members died from illness, one committed suicide, two died in car accidents, and one died in an accident. The causes of death for the two service members were not disclosed.

Three of the deceased were soldiers, two were officers, one was a warrant officer, and two were long-term service members.

Sumerinli emphasized that no armed incidents have been recorded since the initialing of the peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia on August 8, 2025. He noted that the Azerbaijani army has suffered no combat losses since 2024.

At a meeting in Washington on August 8, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a declaration on the cessation of hostilities. US President Donald Trump stated that the key issue that had prevented the signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Zangezur Corridor, had been resolved. The foreign ministers of the two countries appealed to the OSCE with a proposal to dissolve the Minsk Group.
