Georgian journalist Amaglobeli treats her administrative case as fabricated

At trial on an administrative case, Mziya Amaglobeli, the founder of the “Batumelebi” and “Netgazeti” online publications, denied any guilt in insulting police inspectors.

On March 4, the Batumi City Court extended the arrest of Mziya Amaglobeli in the case on an attack on the Batumi police chief. The journalist refused to admit any guilt. The court found most of the defence evidence inadmissible, including witness testimony and video recordings.

On the night of January 12, ten people were detained in Batumi, including Mziya Amaglobeli. The reason for the detention of the journalist was a poster calling for a general strike, which she pasted on a wall. When Mziya Amaglobeli was released, she found herself in a crowd where an incident occurred involving Batumi police chief Irakli Dgebuadze. After that, the journalist was detained again for attacking the law enforcer.

Advocate Tamar Kordzaya has emphasized that Mziya Amaglobeli should not be held in custody.

“The only reason she is in custody is that the court decided that she could commit a repeat offense,” stated advocate Tamar Kordzaya as quoted by the “Interpressnews” agency.

Mziya Amaglobeli herself noted that she had never publicly insulted anyone in her entire life. At the same time, the detention report states that the journalist was arrested not for putting up a sticker, but for verbally insulting police inspectors.
