The fact of Shamil Buraev's detention confirmed by "Novaya Gazeta"

People from the editorial board of the "Novaya Gazeta," where journalist Anna Politkovskaya had worked, have confirmed that Shamil Buraev, former head of the Achkhoy-Martan District of Chechnya, was detained on suspicion of being involved in Politkovskaya's murder. Sergey Sokolov, deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper, told about it to the "Echo Moskvy" Radio.

We remind you that earlier the fact of Shamil Buraev's detention in Moscow was confirmed by one of his relatives in a telephone conversation with the "Interfax" Agency.

According to the "Komsomolskaya Pravda" newspaper, the information on Buraev's detention was also confirmed by the law enforcement bodies, as well as the fact that he was arrested under the article of "murder organization."

According to "Komsomolskaya Pravda," Shamil Buraev is suspected of organizing Politkovskaya's murder.

It has already been reported in the "Caucasian Knot" information that Buraev's name had emerged during the arrest of another figurant in this resonant case - ex-FSB Lieutenant-Colonel Pavel Ryaguzov.

According to the investigation, last September, about one month before Anna Politkovskaya's murder, Pavel Ryaguzov, then an employee of the FSB Department, "by abuse of his service duties" found out her home address and illegally delivered it to Shamil Buraev.

However, Buraev himself has stated, in his conversation with the correspondent of the "Kommersant" newspaper, that he had never discussed Anna Politkovskaya in his conversations with Ryaguzov and was never interested to know her home address.

We note here that in 2003 Shamil Buraev ran, in contest with Akhmad Kadyrov, for the President of the Chechen Republic and by the election outcomes took the third place.

On the eve of the 2003 presidential elections in Chechnya Shamil Buraev had stated that in case of Kadyrov's election to be President, the "pre-war" regime will set up in Chechnya, and a real hunt on dissidents will be launched.
