Concert organizers doubt need for dress code for performers in Northern Caucasus

There is no need to introduce a dress code for the pop performers who come to give concerts in the republics of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD), since the performers are sensitive to local traditions, tour organizers have commented on the officials' idea.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that residents of Dagestan had repeatedly complained about tourists for their behaviour and appearance. In 2023, the republic's Tourism Ministry issued a memo for visiting guests, recommending them to wear "modest" clothing and follow the conduct rules when in the republic.

There have also been repeated calls to protect residents from certain cultural events. The rappers MC Doni and Eldjei, and the pop singer Stas Mikhailov were forced to cancel their concerts in Makhachkala.

The Russian Ministry of Culture has supported the idea of a dress code for performers, the outlet named "Podyom" (Rise) has informed.

According to Irina Filatova, a Russian State Duma MP, each region will have its own dress code: "Saint Petersburg and Moscow will have one set of rules, but Chechnya and Dagestan, and other Caucasian republics will have a completely different one."

In her opinion, a Dagestan musical producer named Zaira believes that adopting a dress code document makes no sense. "How can it specify all the concert outfits for performers performing in different genres? Will they prescribe the skirt length and the neckline? This is unrealistic," she said.

In her opinion, performers themselves should have an understanding of where and in front of what audience they perform, especially in the Caucasian regions. Besides, Zaira emphasized that she did not notice any vulgarity in clothing among the visiting Russian performers.

In January 2024, Bulach Chankalaev, an advisor to Makhachkala Mayor, called on relatives of the Dagestani singer Ashera to "deal" with her concerning her extremely revealing outfit on the stage, the RIA "Novosti" then reported. The singer herself responded to criticism by saying that she "looked gorgeous."
