Zarema Musaeva reprimanded in penal colony

The colony bosses have reprimanded Zarema Musaeva for not wearing a badge; she walked ten meters down the corridor without it. The reprimand may cause non-release of Musaeva under the conditional early relief (CER), an advocate has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that, on December 12, 2023, the Shali City Court denied Musaeva's CER. The court agreed with the arguments of the state prosecution and the colony administration, which asserted that the goals of her punishment had not been achieved, and Musaeva should not be released under CER. But lawyers believe that the court's refusal to apply CER to Musaeva was caused by the political nature of her case, but among other factors, the reason was also in her rather long remaining term, and in the defence's incorrect informational policy.

On July 4, 2023, the court sentenced Musaeva to 5.5 years in colony, finding her guilty of assaulting a policeman. On September 12, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya reduced Musaeva's term down to five years.

Musaeva told Alexander Savin, one of her advocates, that she had a conflict in the dining room, after which she got very upset and decided to return to her cell. In her haste, she forgot her sleeveless shirt with her badge in the diming room. Without the badge, Musaeva walked no more than ten meters from the dining room to her cell. This became known to the colony staff; and on December 29, she was reprimanded for violating the colony order. Musaeva believes that her conflict with another prisoner has been provoked, the "Team against Torture" (TaT)* has reported.

*The "Team against Torture" (TaT, formerly the "Committee against Torture" – CaT) was created by the lawyers who had earlier worked for the CaT, which was included into the register of the NCOs performing the functions of foreign agents.
