Participant in rally in Magas placed under house arrest

A court in Essentuki has placed under house arrest a resident of Ingushetia, detained on suspicion of attacking law enforcers at a rally in Magas.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 25, a participant in a rally in Magas against changing the border with Chechnya, who was announced wanted in 2019, had surrendered to the police.

The man was placed under house arrest, the human rights project "OVD-Info"* has reported in its Telegram channel.

The arrested person is suspected of using dangerous violence against a government official, said Khussein Guliev, an advocate. The defence will seek to reclassify the case to a less serious charge, the "Fortanga" outlet has reported.

According to Mr Guliev, his client, when the law enforcers began to disperse the protesters, tried to interfere with their actions by throwing a metal fence in their direction.

The advocate has emphasized that the suspect had not been wanted for a long time and was not hiding. All the time before appearing at the police, he worked on a rotational basis in the north.

Seven Ingush protest leaders were accused of creating of and participating in an extremist community. In December 2021, the court sentenced Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Malsag Uzhakhov to nine years in colony each, Ismail Nalgiev, Bagaudin Khautiev and Barakh Chemurziev to eight years in colony each, and Zarifa Sautieva – to 7.5 years.
