Court sends for reconsideration journalist Magomedov’s complaint about inaction of investigators

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan cancelled the court’s decision to refuse to recognize the inaction of investigators on a complaint filed by Magomed Magomedov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the Dagestani weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft). The case has been sent for reconsideration. Magomed Magomedov requests court to bring to justice the policemen who detained him at his solo picket in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in July 2022, Magomed Magomedov requested court to bring to justice the policemen, who, in his opinion, illegally interfered with his solo picket and exceeded their official powers.

On July 11, 2022, the police detained Magomed Magomedov, who went on a solo picket in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev. Murad Muradov, a correspondent of the “Caucasian Knot”, who was filming the picket, was also detained (included in the register of foreign agents). The police explained the detention by deciding to remove the picketer’s poster from the eyes of Valentina Matvienko, the chair of the Federation Council, whose motorcade was supposed to pass through the place.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 16, the police detained Magomed Magomedov and Idris Yusupov, a journalist of the “Novoye Delo” (New Clause) publication, who intended to hold pickets in defence of Abdulmumin Gadjiev. The police explained the detention of the journalists with a message reporting about the organization of mass riots. On April 17, Magomed Magomedov filed a lawsuit in which he challenged the legality of the actions of the police. Idris Yusupov also seeks a check of the law enforcers’ actions for legality.

On August 17, the court refused to recognize the detention of Magomed Magomedov as illegal. The police explained the detention of the deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Chernovik” by concern for his safety due to a possible fight which might occur.
