Deputy editor-in-chief of Dagestani "Chernovik" outlet demands to punish policemen for disrupting picket

Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" outlet, has filed a lawsuit, in which he challenges the legality of policemen's actions of disrupting his solo picket in support of the arrested Abdulmumin Gadjiev, his colleague. Idris Yusupov, a journalist, who was detained along with Magomedov, is also seeking to check law enforcers' actions.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 16, law enforcers detained Magomed Magomedov and Idris Yusupov, a journalist for the "Novoye Delo" outlet, who intended to hold solo pickets in support of Gadjiev.

The colleagues of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, the arrested editor of the "Chernovik", treat the criminal case against him as political persecution and regularly hold solo pickets in Makhachkala in support of him. Journalists believe that Gadjiev suffers because the outlet used to voice out "uncomfortable issues" for local authorities and law enforcers.

Magomedov said that on January 16, eight policemen approached the venue of his solo picket and surrounded him demanding to stop the action.

According to his story, the policemen explained their demand with the information that "certain persons are preparing to fight in the square", and Magomedov fits the description. However, as he added, no charges were brought against the journalists after detention.

Let us remind you that Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov, the head of the "Ansar" Charitable Fund, and Kemal Tambiev, an activist, are in custody since June 2019 on charges of financing terrorism.

On March 23, the court rejected Tambiev's petition, in which he asked to treat his testimony, obtained under pressure, as inadmissible evidence. On April 6, the court rejected Rizvanov's similar request. On April 13, the court extended the defendant's arrest by three months.
