ECtHR awards compensations to nine detainees at rally in Magas

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found violations in considering the cases of nine residents of Ingushetia detained at the venue of a rally in Magas in 2019. The ECtHR has obliged Russian authorities to pay them compensations ranging from 3500 to 5000 euros, despite the fact that Russia refused to comply with ECtHR's decisions.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in November 2019, Albert Balakhoev, a resident of Ingushetia, complained to the ECtHR and stated that he occasionally occurred at the venue of an unsanctioned rally in Magas, but was detained, subjected to a four-hour-long interrogation, after which he was fined. Other activists, including Bagaudin Gagiev, also complained to the ECtHR about searches, arrests and fines due to their participation in the rally. In December of the same year, Murat Bekov, Ilez Barakhoev, Vakha and Ruslan Dzeitov complained to the ECtHR about violations of their rights to a fair trial, and the freedoms of expression and assembly.

On March 26, 2019, protesters extended their protest action in Magas without authorities' sanction. The next day, clashes broke out of protesters with law enforcers.

The ECtHR has awarded compensations to nine residents of Ingushetia who were detained at a rally in 2019. Thus, Bagaudin Gagiev, who was arrested for 10 days, should receive 5000 euros. The ECtHR has treated his detention as unlawful and acknowledged the absence of impartiality of the local court in making its ruling, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project reports.
