Court reduces fine for Dagestani journalist Magdi Kamalov for discrediting Russian army

The court of cassation reduced from 100,000 to 30,000 roubles the fine imposed on Magdi Kamalov, a founder of the Dagestani weekly newspaper “Chernovik” (Rough Draft), under the article on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in May 2022, a court sentenced Magdi Kamalov to a fine, considering his repost in the Telegram channel of the newspaper “Chernovik” of the post written by Igor Strelkov, the former Defence Minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), as discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. Magdi Kamalov claimed that there was no offense in his actions and decided to achieve a full acquittal.

According to Magomed Magomedov, the deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Chernovik”, the editorial office does not agree with the accusation of an offense and will file an appeal against the ruling of the local court to the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia, the “Kavkaz.Realii”* reports.

Let us remind you that the court imposed on Magdi Kamalov the minimum fine provided for an official. The founder of the newspaper “Chernovik” considered the decision of the court illogical. “For some reason, individual Magdi Kamalov became a legal entity in this case. The case has nothing in common with the newspaper ‘Chernovik’,” Magdi Kamalov said.

On November 17, 2022, the editorial office of the newspaper “Chernovik” claimed that the authorities were preventing the print version from being released. The journalists connected the above obstacle with the position of Dagestani leader Sergey Melikov. On November 28, the newspaper temporarily stopped releasing its printed version.
