Native of Dagestan claims torture in court

Adilkhan Amambaev, who was sentenced to nine years in prison within the case of recruitment to the IS*, has stated in his complaint that his case had been falsified and his confession of guilt was obtained under torture. However, the Russian Supreme Court (SC) has upheld the verdict.

Adilkhan Amambaev, a native of the Nogai District of Dagestan, who was sentenced to nine years in prison for inciting his acquaintance to join the "Islamic State"* (IS or ISIL), an international terrorist organization, has stated that he had been tortured by law enforcers, and the materials of the criminal case against him were falsified.

According to the "Kavkaz.Realii"** project, under investigators' version, in August-September 2021, through his correspondence in a messenger, Amambaev persuaded his acquaintance to join the ranks of the ISIL* and commit a terror act. Amambaev has stated that "during his detention on October 27, 2021, law enforcers put psychological pressure on him and used physical violence, forcing him to testify about his involvement in crimes that he had never committed." He has also noted that after detention, law enforcers had access to his phone; and the correspondence found in it "was falsified by law enforcers."

However, the SC found that the traumas received by Amambaev were the result of his resistance to detention. One of law enforcers asserted that Amambaev "had himself unblocked his phone and provided access thereto; and "no unauthorized methods" had been used.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the court had sentenced Bulat Gamzatov, a native of Makhachkala, to 15.5 years in colony, finding him as the organizer of a terrorist organization's unit, whose members had planned attacks on lkaw enforcers in Stavropol.
