FSB's report on preventing terror act in Stavropol Territory is the third in a month

In October, the Russia's FSB (Federal Security Service) has reported three times about the prevention of terror acts and detention of three groups of supporters of radical movements. According to law enforcers, they twice detained supporters of the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS)*; the last time supporters of Ukrainian radical organizations were detained. Law enforcers named an administrative facility, a police station and a transport infrastructure facility as the terrorists' targets.

Today, the FSB has reported on the detention of four persons, who had been planning to commit a terror act in the Stavropol Territory. According to the FSB, they are supporters of Ukrainian radical organizations.

On October 24, law enforcers reported the detention of two supporters of the "Islamic State" (IS)*, a terrorist organization banned in Russia by the court. According to the FSB, they were preparing a terror act at the police station "at the direction of foreign emissaries." The group, according to law enforcers, included natives from Central Asia.

On October 7, the FSB reported the detention of members of the IS* cell, who had been planning a terror act on a transport infrastructure facility.

Let us remind you that in April this year, the FSB twice reported on the prevention of terror acts in the Stavropol Territory. Thus, on April 25, the FSB reported a detention of an IS* supporter suspected of plotting a terror act on a transport infrastructure facility in the Stavropol Territory.

Special services are motivated to spread dubious reports about detentions of alleged terrorists in the Stavropol Territory in order to improve their reporting and for propaganda purposes, Elena Suslova, a journalist, and Arsen Sarkisov, a human rights defender, have explained. Valery Ledovskoy, the coordinator of the Centre for Civic Initiatives of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD), has named a warning about the consequences of participation in radical organizations as a likely goal of such propaganda.

  • Rights defenders treat case of missing Movsar Umarov as typical for Chechnya
