Criminal case on discrediting army opened against a 71-year-old Sochi activist

A criminal case has been initiated against Vladimir Atamanchuk, a 71-year-old Sochi activist, under the article on discrediting the Russian Army; he is under the recognizance not to leave.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Atamanchuk, who was fined twice for discrediting the armed forces, was detained on September 7 on charges of disobeying law enforcers. He was taken into custody for five days. According to his version, while he was under arrest, law enforcers came to his apartment and were looking for something there.

Atamanchuk said that the day before, law enforcers came to his home and served a summons to appear for interrogation on October 21.

The resolution on opening the case says that on September 4, Atamanchuk, "while realizing the public danger of his actions ... distributed leaflets containing information discrediting the use of the Russian Armed Forces."

The resolution gives the contents of the leaflet. In particular, Atamanchuk writes that the majority of Sochi residents adhere to pacifist views; and the authorities are persecuting dissidents.

It is also noted that Atamanchuk has committed "public actions" "after being brought to administrative responsibility for a similar act within one year."
