Human rights defender urges Prosecutor’s Office to intervene in detained Ingush native’s case

In his appeal to the Russian General Prosecutor and the chairman of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), human rights defender Magomed Mutsolgov noted that Issa Gazdiev, a resident of the Maiskoye village in North Ossetia, was accused, like other Ingush natives had been accused earlier, of a murder committed 30 years ago. The human rights defender called on the leader of Ingushetia to stop persecution of people on ethnic grounds. Instagram* users supported the human rights defender.

Magomed Mutsolgov posted on his Telegram channel an appeal addressed to Russian General Prosecutor Igor Krasnov and Alexander Bastrykin, the chair of the ICRF.

The specific feature of this case is that it “has a long history with a pronounced anti-Ingush context,” the human rights defender pointed out. “We are talking about the murder of the head of the railway station in the village of Maiskoye in the Prigorodny District. At different times, different people were detained allegedly for committing that crime, and they were released, as they were not guilty, but all the detainees were Maiskoye residents of the Ingush nationality. There is an impression that law enforcers want to ‘hang’ the old case on any resident of Ingush nationality of the Prigorodny District,” Magomed Mutsolgov states in his appeal.

In the period from October 30 to November 6, 1992, an armed conflict occurred on the territory of the Prigorodny District and part of Vladikavkaz because of the aggravation of interethnic relations between Ossetian and Ingush people. According to the Russian General Prosecutor’s Office, 618 people perished and 939 others were injured.

Earlier, Magomed Mutsolgov posted on his Telegram channel a similar appeal to Makhmud-Ali Kalimatov, the leader of Ingushetia.

In their comments, some social media users supported the human rights defender. “We ask all top-ranking officials to demonstrate humanity, fairly investigate the case, and release the person who is not guilty,” user al_albeny, in particular, urged.
