Life-sentenced native of Chechnya awarded compensation for judicial red tape

The Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya has partially satisfied the lawsuit lodged by Mansur Razhaev, convicted to life-long imprisonment within a case of links with militants. The man demanded compensation from Russian authorities for violating the right to a trial within a reasonable time.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in July 2011, Razhaev was accused of participating in an illegal armed formation (IAF), whose members on September 5, 1999, invaded the Novolaksky District of Dagestan, captured Russian militaries and publicly executed them. Razhaev demanded to recognize as unlawful the refusals of the colony staff to send sealed registered mail to his legal representative at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and his advocate.

The Chechen SC has considered Razhaev's lawsuit against the Russian Ministry of Finance, in which he demanded 300,000 roubles for violating his right to legal proceedings within a reasonable time, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* has reported. The SC has satisfied his demands in part, appointing compensation in the amount of 30,000 roubles.
