Aliev announces army deployment in Lachin

The Azerbaijani Army has entered the town of Lachin and took control over the villages of Zabukh and Sus, Azeri President, Ilham Aliev, has announced.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that earlier Baku analysts had informed about the presence of Azerbaijani law enforcers in Lachin. They noted that this had not yet been officially announced due to the delay in the launch of an alternative road running from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia.

"Today, on August 26, we, Azerbaijanis, have returned into the town of Lachin (Berdzor). The Azerbaijani Army has been deployed there. The villages of Zabukh (the Armenian name is Akhavno) and Sus are now under our control," Mr Aliev wrote on the Twitter.

On August 11, the Azeri State Highway Agency (ASHA) reported that the construction of a road along the new route of the Lachin Corridor was over. However, due to the fact that Armenia failed to finish its section of the highway alternative to the Lachin Corridor, this was undertaken by Azerbaijan at the request of the Armenian community of Karabakh.

On August 5, the Karabakh authorities informed the residents of the communities of Akhavno (Zabukh), Sus and Berdzor (Lachin) that they had to leave their houses by August 25, since the Lachin Corridor would be transferred to Azerbaijan. Most of residents of the dwelling settlements located in the Lachin Corridor decided to settle in the Syunik Region of Armenia; 20 families have already moved and settled there.
