Analysts share sceptical expectations from meeting between Aliev and Pashinyan

According to Armenian political analysts, the uncertainty of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh does not let the republic to conclude any fundamental agreements at the meeting between Ilham Aliev and Nikol Pashinyan, but it cannot be ruled out that a framework document would be signed. Yerevan associates the agreement with the status of Karabakh, but Baku does not intend to discuss the fate of the territory, which is considered Azerbaijani by international law, Azerbaijani analysts note.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will meet in Brussels today. Yerevan and Baku are groping towards common ground on the issue of a peace agreement, but that may be hampered by separatist sentiments in the region, Azerbaijani political analysts point out.

According to the version of Akop Badalyan, an observer for the “1in.am” portal, there are no prerequisites for signing a document on Karabakh due to the opposite positions of the parties to the conflict, as well as the tension between the West and Russia.

Ovsep Khushudyan, the head of the “Free Citizen” Civil Initiatives Support Centre, does not rule out that a framework agreement will be signed in Brussels. It is important for Armenia that Azerbaijan adheres to the obligation of non-use and threat of use of force, Ovsep Khushudyan emphasizes.

Naira Airumyan, the editor-in-chief of the “Lragir.am” version, considers it logical if a document is signed in Brussels on returning to negotiations within the OSCE Minsk Group.

Tofig Tyurkel, an observer for the “Turan” agency, doubts that any breakthrough solutions will be reached in Brussels. “At best, a communique can be signed on readiness to continue the peace process,” Tofig Tyurkel said.
