Doctors provide medical help to Saakashvili in jail

On the 22nd day of his hunger strike held in Rustavi Prison, Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili, a former Georgian President, received a blood transfusion due to the deterioration of his blood tests, his personal doctor, Nikoloz Kipshidze, has informed, adding that his patient needs treatment in a civilian hospital.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Saakashvili is kept in Rustavi Prison, where he has been on a hunger strike since October 1, demanding his release. The board of doctors has recommended placing the former president into a clinic for intensive observation; at protest actions, Saakashvili's supporters insisted on the same. The politician himself said that he did not intend to end his hunger strike, but agreed to receive medication as a last resort. The Georgian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has stated that if necessary Saakashvili would be hospitalized in a prison hospital rather than a private clinic. Authorities fear that supporters of the former president can storm the private hospital, and expect to mentally break him in uncomfortable conditions, Vakhtang Maisaya, a political analyst has suggested.

The doctor has explained that they decided to conduct the blood transfusion procedure, because one indicator in Saakashvili's blood test had deteriorated, the Report Agency has informed. According to his personal doctor, Saakashvili's health condition has returned to the normal one.

Doctor Kipshidze has stressed that the former president refuses to undergo any treatment in the prison hospital, the "News-Georgia" has reported.
