Akhmednabiev’s killers remain unpunished for eight years

During eight years, investigators have failed to find either the executor or the customer of the murder of the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev, who was shot dead in Dagestan on July 9, 2013.

He was shot dead near his house in the village of Semender in Dagestan. Akhmednabi had worked for the "Caucasian Knot" as its own correspondent for over seven years, covering acute topics.

His relatives and colleagues are awaiting a decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on their complaint. Tumas Misakyan, an advocate, attracted to the case by the "Caucasian Knot", sent a complaint to the ECtHR back in June 2016; and in August of the same year it was registered and has since been awaiting consideration.

The complaint about the inefficient investigation of Akhmednabiev's murder was sent to the ECtHR after all the mechanisms for defending the rights of the suffered party had been exhausted in Russia, the advocate has noted.

The inquiry into the Akhmednabiev’s murder case was suspended eight times. The advocate Misakyan managed to reopen the inquiry through the courts, but the Sovietsky District Court of Makhachkala and the Supreme Court of Dagestan refused to treat the investigators’ inaction as illegal.

Investigators used to claim that they had done a great job to investigate the murder of the journalist, but they failed to establish either the customer of the murder, who "disliked Akhmednabiev's publications," or the perpetrator of the crime.
