OMCT claims human rights violations in "Terter case"

In Azerbaijan, 78 persons were detained and sentenced to terms from 12 to 20 years in prison under the so-called "Terter case", the World Organisation Against Torture (Organisation Mondiale Contre la Torture - OMCT) has reported. The detainees were tortured; there are 11 confirmed deaths from torture, human rights defenders have claimed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that rights defenders declared the convicts under the "Terter case" as political prisoners; this group includes 25 persons, says the report of the Union "For Freedom of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners" published in April.

A group of military servicemen and civilians was arrested in Baku on charges of cooperation with Armenian special services and plotting acts of sabotage against units of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) and in dwelling settlements of the Terter District.

The OMCT has reported cases of torture and deaths of servicemen and civilians detained in Azerbaijan within the "Terter case". At least 78 Azerbaijani citizens were detained and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 12 to 20 years; there have been numerous cases of torture, including 11 deaths of militaries and civilians in jails, the OMCT says in its statement released on April 13 on its website.

The OMCT has condemned the Azerbaijani government and law enforcement bodies for human rights violations, demanding from Azerbaijani authorities to conduct an inquiry into the facts of detainees' torture and subsequent deaths, as well as of all other allegations of torture and cruel treatment.
