Chechnya registers 95% voter turnout during pandemic

According to the official statistics, Chechnya showed the highest voter turnout in the Russian Federation at the voting on amendments to the Constitution. In Southern Russia, ten regions registered lower voter turnout as compared to the presidential election in 2018.

In Russia, the voting on the constitutional amendments ended on July 1. In the Krasnodar Territory, the Rostov Region, and Dagestan, observers complained about the non-transparency of the voting, and in Chechnya, public sector employees claimed coercion to voting. Meanwhile, Ella Pamfilova, the chair of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Russia, reported that the highest voter turnout in the country had been registered in Chechnya.

According to the information released by the Russian CEC, 77.92% of voters supported the amendments to the Constitution, while 21.27% of the voters opposed the amendments.

The highest voter turnout in the country – 95% – has been registered in Chechnya. Among the regions of Southern Russia, Dagestan with the voter turnout of 90% took the second place. In two other regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD), the voter turnout exceeded 80%: North Ossetia registered 82% and the Stavropol Territory – 81%.

Thus, the voter turnout at the voting on the amendments to the Constitution of Russia exceeded the turnout at the presidential election in three regions of the NCFD, including Chechnya, Dagestan, and the Stavropol Territory. Other regions of the NCFD registered higher voter turnout at the presidential election in 2018.
