Azerbaijan enhances police quarantine enforcement

In Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has removed road checkpoints in order to involve more policemen in foot patrols. The police enhance the control over the compliance with the requirements of social distancing and the use of medical masks.

By July 1, in Azerbaijan, the number of coronavirus-infected people reached 18,112, and 220 people died. The Azerbaijan's authorities announced stabilization of the situation with COVID-19.

According to the Azerbaijan's MIA, the police checkpoints arranged on roads in Baku because of the strict quarantine regime will been removed starting from July 2.

Drivers' permissions for travelling will be monitored by CCTV cameras. There will be more police patrols in the streets.

Emin Guseinov, the director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), believes that the police should first of all use deterrence measures and less punitive measures.

"Tough measures should be taken against those persons who badly violate the rules, that is, who gather in groups, arrange picnics and entertainment parties," Emin Guseinov said.
