Family links attack on Tsotne Gamsakhurdiya with case of his father's death

Tsotne Gamsakhurdiya, a son of Zviad Gamsakhurdiya, the first president of Georgia, had feared for his life, while seeking punishment for the alleged killers of his father, his friends and relatives have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 19, Tsotne Gamsakhurdiya was hospitalized after an assassination attempt on him committed in central Tbilisi. The police opened a case of an attempted murder. Tsotne's health condition after two surgeries remains grave, doctors report.

The Gamsakhurdiya family and his friends do not exclude that the attack has to do with the death of the first president of Georgia. "Last year, Tsotne repeatedly told me and other friends about his possible murder. He linked it with the arrival from Russia of a person close to the authorities. This all is connected with the death of his father, Zviad Gamsakhurdiya," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent quotes the words of Vakhtang Gelashvili, a Tsotne's friend, spoken on air of the "Mtavari Arkhi" TV Channel.

The first president of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdiya, died in December 1993 in a village in the Samegrelo Region in Western Georgia, where he, along with several of his supporters, was hiding from the authorities. In 2010, an interim commission set up to investigate the circumstances of his death rejected the original version of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) that Zviad Gamsakhurdiya committed suicide.

Over the past year, Tsotne Gamsakhurdiya often said that the authorities have done nothing to punish those responsible for his father's death, his relatives have noted.
