Azerbaijan condemns recognition of Armenian Genocide by US Senate

The resolution of the US Senate on recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire was an attempt to put pressure on Turkey, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated. The resolution will worsen the US-Turkish relations, but will not affect the Karabakh settlement, Azerbaijani experts believe.

"The resolution on recognition of the 'Armenian Genocide' adopted by the US Senate is an attempt to falsify history," Leyla Abdullaeva, the MFA spokesperson, has declared.

The genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire was recognized by more than 20 countries, including Russia. Turkey denies the fact of the Armenian Genocide; it is supported by Azerbaijani authorities.

Alesker Mamedli, a member of the Civil Society Platform, treats it as abnormal that "parliaments are assessing historical events," since "scientists should deal with the history."

Tofig Tyurkel, an observer of the "Turan" News Agency, also considers the above resolution to be a "biased document."

"Obviously, this is pressure on Turkey because of its independent policy in the Middle East and the military operation in Syria, undertaken contrary to US objections," Mr Tyurkel has explained to the "Caucasian Knot".

The US resolution will lead neither to weakening of Turkey nor to strengthening of Armenia, Togrul Djuvarly, a member of the Azerbaijani National Public Committee for European Integration, has stated.

In his turn, Li Litzenberger, the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, has stated that the Senate resolution does not reflect the official White House's policy. The US and Turkey remain allies, the diplomat has emphasized.
