Kadyrov fails to abandon the idea to write off gas debts

The Chechen authorities have never demanded to write off all debts for the consumed gas, but insist on an individual approach to different consumers-debtors, the press secretary of the head of the republic has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 16, the Chechen Prosecutor's Office (PO) reported that a Grozny court had obliged the Gazprom to write off the Chechen population's "hopeless debts" in the amount of over nine billion roubles. The company has appealed against this court judgement.

On April 11, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya granted the complaint of the "Gazprom" against writing off the debts to republic's consumers. Huge losses of gas occurred in Chechnya during the years of warfare; therefore the state and the "Gazprom" should write off the republic's indebtedness, Ramzan Kadyrov has stated after the SC's decision.

Alvi Karimov, the press secretary of the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, explained on April 12 that the writing off of all the multi-billion-rouble debts is out of question.

"In their statements, the republic's leadership suggested to deal with each person individually. The SC has ordered to conduct an inventory. There are numerous facts when, for example, several contracts were concluded with one person," the "Kommersant" quotes Mr Karimov as saying.

The press secretary also raised the issue of the amount of debts; according to Karimov, "there was no question of writing off 9 billion roubles in the decision of the Zavodskoy District Court." "It was launched by someone, and then everyone repeated what one edition said somewhere. We are just asking you to put things in order," he has stressed.
