Dispute over Chechen-Ingush border sets a precedent for Caucasus and Russia

When making a decision on the issue of the Chechen-Ingush border, the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation should be guided by "reasonable terms," notes advocate Igor Trunov. He believes "it will not take more than a week or two." The decision creates a precedent for future verdicts on similar cases, notes advocate Yevgeny Chernousov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 27, the Russian Constitutional Court concluded the hearings on the issue of the Chechen-Ingush border. The decision will be made behind closed doors, stated Court Chair Valery Zorkin. At the trial, representatives of the federal authorities supported the agreement. On the same day, participants of a rally in Nazran demanded to cancel the agreement.

The Constitutional Court never makes decisions immediately after the hearings, Igor Trunov notes.

"The issue is serious precisely by its precedence and subsequent reaction to territorial disputes between the subjects of the Russian Federation. There are a lot of similar problems, since the borders of the territories were often set ill-considered," the advocate said.

The opinion is shared by advocate Yevgeny Chernousov.

"The situation is complicated: the case of delimitation of the subjects of the Russian Federation is being considered for the first time. A practice is being created, a precedent. When making a decision, the Court should also take into account the protest actions in Magas and Nazran. There is no chance for Constitutional Court of Russia to make a wrong decision," said Yevgeny Chernousov.
