Legalized border with Chechnya is Evkurov's Pyrrhic victory

The transfer of the dispute about the Ingush-Chechen border into the legal plane with the tacit Kremlin's support of Evkurov is a Pyrrhic victory of the head of Ingushetia over the opponents of his agreement with Kadyrov. The opposition will not give up its demands; while relations of the two nations are clouded with the mutual discontent, believe Ali Magomadov, a political analyst, and Akhmed Gisaev, the head of the Human Rights Analysis Centre.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since October 4, Magas, the capital of Ingushetia, was the venue of a mass action against the changing the border with Chechnya, which was interrupted in order to prepare the World Congress of the Ingush People. On October 31, the organizers called for the early completion of the protest rally.

On October 30, the Ingush Constitutional Court (CC) declared the law on the border with Chechnya to be unconstitutional. The head of Ingushetia, Yunus-Bek Evkurov, said that the CC's decision did not cancel the agreement, since it had already entered into force.

According to Mr Magomadov, even having conceded, the opposition will not forget about its demands.

"The signing of the agreement ... has planted a seed of discontent into the fertile soil of the two nations. The Ingush opposition must not admit a split among the two fraternal peoples," Ali Magomadov has stated.

In his turn, Mr Gisaev believes that no benefit has been gained from the rallies. He believes that if Ingushetia had achieved direct elections, all the problems would have been solved.

At the same time, he noted that the Ingush opposition could not act independently, "without the support of large figures close to the authorities, or oligarchs."
