Festive fairs in Azerbaijan fail to stop price growth for sacrificial animals

Despite the sale of almost 50,000 sacrificial animals, prices during this year's Kurban-Bairam (Eid al-Adha) have significantly gone up compared to 2017, residents of Azerbaijan assert. Some residents of Baku also criticized a short weekend on the occasion of the holiday.

Muslims celebrate the feast of sacrifice in memory of the decision of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son. It is one of the two main Muslim holidays.

The celebration of Kurban-Bairam in Azerbaijan began on August 22. On that day, the ceremony of sacrificing animals also began.

Believers told about the increased prices. One of them, Vakhid Agarzaev, bought a sacrificial sheep in the Yasamal Marketplace of Baku for 210 manats (107 US dollars). According to his story, a year ago, the same sheep cost him 180 manats (92 US dollars).

Agarzaev has noted that according to the laws of Islam, he left a third of the meat to the family, gave a third to relatives, and the remaining third – to poor people.
