Tbilisi protests split into two camps

Students of Tbilisi universities did not support the political demands of the participants in the action "#don'tkill", and held a separate solidarity action with the father of one of the stabbed schoolboys, without any resignation demands.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the protest action "#don'tkill" is on in Tbilisi since May 31, triggered by the unfair, in participants' opinion, court judgement on the murder of two schoolboys. Irakli Shotadze, the Chief Public Prosecutor of Georgia, resigned at the background of protest.

"The protesters, who stay in front of the parliament, demand to change the government, but we are not for this; we demand to punish the killers; we want justice; but don't want the system to collapse," one of the protesting girls-students has stated.

Political analysts note that it is still difficult to predict the outcomes of protests underway in Georgia.

Niki Chitadze, the head of the Centre for Studying Security and International Relations, and Kakha Gogolashvili, the head of the Institute for Strategic and International Studies, believe that the development of the situation depends on the number of protesters and authorities' reaction.

"The action is serious; the number of its participants is growing rapidly; and their demands are becoming tougher," Mr Gogolashvili has stated, adding that the authorities are acting inefficiently and "lag behind the events." In this regard, he did not rule out that actions could lead to a revolution. The situation can be settled by a quick inquiry into the murder; however, to restore public trust, the authorities will have to strain a lot of efforts, he has concluded.
