Efendiev, Sultan Medjid

Azerbaijani statesman and party activist. One of the founders of Communist Party of Azerbaijan.

Born May 26, 1887, in the city of Shemakha. Son of a vendor. Participated in the revolutionary movement of Azerbaijan since 1902; in 1904, was one of the organizers of Gummet social democrat group; was a participant of the Revolution of 1905-1907. In 1915, graduated from Medicine Department of Kazan State University receiving a qualification of a physician.

After the February Revolution of 1917, was a member of Baku Council, Gummet Committee, and RSDRP(b) Committee (Russian Social Democrat Workers' Party of Bolsheviks). Since 1918, was a participant of Astrakhan defense, Commissar on the Transcaucasian Muslims' affairs of the People's Commissariat of Nationalities of RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic), and deputy chairman of the Central Bureau of Communist Organization of Orient Peoples of the Central Committee of RKP(b) (Russian Communist Party of Bolsheviks). In 1920-1921, was a member of the Executive Committee of Baku Council, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Central Committee of Azerbaijani KP(b), and Commissar of Gyandji Province. Commanded the suppression of anti-Bolshevik rebellion in Gyandji. IN 1921-1924, was a member of the Central Executive Committee, People's Commissar of Lands, People's Commissar of Revolutionary Commissariat of Azerbaijani SSR (Soviet Socialist Republic). In 1924-1927, was a chairman of the Central Committee of the KP(b) of Azerbaijan. Since 1927, was a deputy chairman and since 1931 the chairman of the Central Executive Committee of Azerbaijani SSR and one of the chairmen of the Central Executive Committee of ZSFSR (Transcaucasian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic). In 1924-1927, was a member of Central Committee of VKP(b) (All-Union Communist Party of the Bolsheviks); was also a member of Transcaucasian Regional Committee of VKP(b), Bureau of the Central Committee of Azerbaijani KP(b), and member of the Central Executive Committee of USSR.

In late 1930s, fell a victim of illegal repressions: according to official data, was shot on April 21, 1938. Rehabilitated posthumously.
