Novoshakhtinsk

City in Rostov oblast (province), oblast subordination, 105 km north of Rostov-on-Don. Located at the south-east spurs of the Donets Ridge, near the railway station of Mikhaylo-Leontyevskaya in the Gornaya - Dolzhanskay line, on the Kharkov - Rostov-on-Don highway. Population (1992 est.) 107.1 thousand, (1926 est.) 7 thousand, (1939 est.) 48 thousand, (1959 est.) 104 thousand, (1970 est.) 102 thousand, (1979 est.) 104 thousand.

Formed of several mining settlements in 1939. The industrial centre of Eastern Donbass. Production of mineral coal. Present Novoshakhtinsk has a mechanical factory, a factory manufacturing lightings, enterprises of light and food-processing industry, production of building materials.
