Dagestan Head Melikov is leaving his post in the republic and moving to another position, Putin announced.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," a report on the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Sergei Melikov in March 2026 took up only two lines on the Kremlin website. Meanwhile, the head of the republic reported on his Telegram channel that he spoke about Dagestan's economic achievements and support for the North Caucasus Military District. According to sources, Melikov requested 20 billion rubles for the implementation of a number of projects, as well as the construction of an ice arena.

Sergey Melikov is leaving his post as head of Dagestan and moving to another position, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced at a meeting with representatives of the region in the Kremlin, TASS reports.

"The current head of the republic, Sergei Alimovich Melikov, ends his term in September. He has accomplished a great deal, and we are grateful to him for that. But he is moving on to another job, and life moves on," the head of state said.

Recall that Novoye Delo drew attention to the Kremlin's brevity after the meeting with Melikov, noting that previous reports of meetings between the Russian president and the heads of republics were similarly brief, followed shortly by their resignations. Thus, after a meeting with Putin on February 15, 2006, the Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Dagestan (at that time, that was the name of the position of the head of the republic, - Ed. "Caucasian Knot") Magomedali Magomedov, following which a two-line text was published on the Kremlin website, Magomedov told journalists right at the airport that at a meeting with the president he announced his desire to resign.

A similar short text appeared on the Kremlin website after a meeting between Putin and Mukhu Aliyev, whose candidacy was not submitted to the republic's parliament for a new term, the publication says.
