Nine Ukrainian citizens were convicted in Rostov-on-Don for planning terrorist attacks.

The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced nine Kherson residents, finding them guilty of attempting to assassinate local officials. The convicted were sentenced to 14 to 20 years in prison.

The court sentenced the nine Kherson residents on January 30.

According to investigators, in March 2022, Security Service of Ukraine officers created a terrorist organization in the Kherson region. From March to August 2022, the group included accused Ukrainian citizens Konstantin Reznik, Sergei Kabakov, Sergei Geydta, Oleg Bogdanov, Yuriy Tavozhnyansky, Sergei Kovalsky, Yuriy Kaev, and Denis Lalka, as well as Russian citizen Sergei Ofitserov, Kommersant reports.

The defendants were supposed to conduct surveillance on employees of the Kherson Oblast military-civil administration and Russian military personnel, store weapons, manufacture homemade explosive devices, and organize explosions.

In April 2022, Konstantin Reznik drove a car with a bomb attached to the hood of a transport company parking lot. He and Kabakov were supposed to detonate it near the location of one of the officials and the soldier accompanying him. However, the perpetrators did not have enough time to move the car to the designated location, and the explosion did not take place.

In June of that year, Reznik and Kabakov were tasked with blowing up a pier where Oleksiy Kovalev, the deputy head of the Kherson regional administration, was stationed. However, the explosion failed.

In April 2022, Kovalsky received and stored two automatic weapons, ammunition, and two hand grenades in a hiding place. He was detained in August while retrieving a mock-up of an IED from the hiding place. Afterward, Kovalsky agreed to cooperate with security forces. In August, he received a bomb from Kaev and Lalka to blow up the car of Kyrylo Stremousov, the deputy head of the Kherson regional administration.

Tavozhnyansky handed over money received from the SBU to his accomplices, intended for the preparation of terrorist attacks; Bogdanov transported explosives from Ukrainian territory to hiding places in Kherson; Geidta manufactured a homemade explosive device.

In July 2022, members of the group were detained while attempting to blow up a jet ski.

The court, despite the fact that none of the terrorist attacks were committed, sentenced all defendants in the case to lengthy prison terms: Reznik and Kabakov were sentenced to 20 years in a maximum-security penal colony, Bogdanov and Tavozhnyansky to 18 years, Geidta, Kovalsky, and Ofitserov to 17 years, and Kaev and Lalka to 14 years. years.
