South-Ossetian residents criticize authorities on anniversary of Djabiev's death

The perpetrators of Inal Djabiev's death have not yet been punished, the "Civil Platform" public movement has stated. The current authorities are unable to hold an efficient inquiry, residents of South Ossetia write on the Instagram.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Djabiev died on August 28, 2020, after he was questioned under the case of an attempt on the life of the Minister of Internal Affairs. Seven law enforcers were charged within the case of Djabiev's death. In this June, four policemen were released after mitigation of charges.

Djabiev's death sparked massive protests and a political crisis in South Ossetia. During the period from the autumn of 2020 to February 2021, a total of 16 MPs boycotted the parliamentary sessions, not allowing obtaining a quorum. The parliament's work was paralyzed. In parallel, Djabiev's relatives, dissatisfied with the inquiry, held a round-the-clock protest in Tskhinvali.

On the first anniversary of Inal Djabiev's death, the "Civil Platform", created by Djabiev's widow, has reminded about President Anatoly Bibilov's promise to punish the perpetrators.

Eduard Kokoity, a former President of South Ossetia, threatened those responsible for Djabiev's death with a "people's trial."

Outside Djabiev's death context, it is impossible to talk about the future of South Ossetia, says the author of the Instagram blog rajdian_urbanica.

"All his life, Inal's father fought for the interests and freedom of South Ossetia. In 2008, Inal distinguished himself during the battles for Tskhinvali ... How can we now explain to young people that, if necessary, they should stand up to defend South Ossetia?" the blogger has asked.

He believes that in the end no one will be punished.
