Ingush activist Magomed Khamkhoev is back at large

Magomed Khamkhoev, an activist, convicted of inciting an attack on law enforcers during mass protests in Magas, has been released from the Pyatigorsk SIZO (pre-trial prison).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 16, 2021, the court found Khamkhoev guilty of inciting people to attack law enforcers and sentenced him to 3.5 years in colony. With account of the term spent by him at the SIZO, he was supposed to spend eight months more in custody. Khamkhoev's relatives and advocate claimed that the charges against him were untenable, and the verdict was unfair and harsh. On July 29, Djabrail Kuriev, an advocate, said that the court had upheld the sentence to Khamkhoev.

Khamkhoev was the first of the participants in the Magas rally in March 2019, who was charged not only with an attack on law enforcers, but also with incitement to do this, said Fatima Urusova, another advocate. The Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" announced Khamkhoev to be a political prisoner.

"Magomed Khamkhoev, a prisoner under the Ingush case, has been released from the SIZO after serving his sentence assigned by the court," Magomed Bekov, an advocate, wrote on the Facebook.
