Putin proposed three candidates for the post of head of Dagestan

Among the candidates proposed by the head of state are: the acting head of Dagestan Fyodor Shchukin, the deputy chairman of the republic's parliament Kamil Davdiev, and the leader of the CPRF faction in the People's Assembly of Dagestan Samir Abdulhalikov. The election of the head of Dagestan will take place in the region's parliament on October 15.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", during the three-day elections from September 18-20, at some polling stations in Makhachkala, there were almost no voters, and in the ballot box of one of them, there were only about 15 ballots, voters said. They attributed the low turnout to apathy and disbelief in change, expressing doubt that their votes could change the political situation.

The head of state has proposed the candidacies of the acting head of Dagestan Fyodor Shchukin, the deputy chairman of the People's Assembly of the republic Kamil Davdiev, and the leader of the CPRF faction in the regional parliament Samir Abdulhalikov, TASS reports, citing the press service of the People's Assembly of Dagestan.

According to the Constitution of Dagestan, the head of the region is elected by the deputies of the People's Assembly of the republic. The session of the Dagestan parliament, at which the head of Dagestan will be elected, will take place on October 15 of this year.

It should be noted that on May 4, 2026, Putin signed a decree on the resignation of the head of Dagestan Sergey Melikov and appointed the acting head of the republic Fyodor Shchukin, who was the chairman of the Supreme Court of the region.

During his tenure as head of Dagestan, Melikov failed to stabilize the situation in the republic. Unrest at Makhachkala airport, protests against mobilization, and terrorist attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent made headlines across the country, analysts pointed out. According to them, the sluggishness in addressing the consequences of the flooding in the spring of 2026 was the final factor that led to the decision to resign.
