Activists reported the destruction of an Armenian-Russian cemetery in Karabakh.

The organization Caucasus Heritage Watch stated that an Armenian-Russian cemetery in Karabakh has been destroyed, where medieval khachkars and 19th-century graves were located.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", Karabakh historians and activists have repeatedly reported the destruction of historical buildings and memorials in the region by the Azerbaijani authorities. On May 4, the organization Caucasus Heritage Watch reported that the memorial for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, established in Stepanakert, was destroyed.

The organization Caucasus Heritage Watch reported that an old Armenian-Russian cemetery in Shusha was destroyed, according to activists, it was demolished between May 9 and 14 of this year, writes Armeniatoday.am on September 5.

The cemetery contained medieval Armenian khachkars, as well as Armenian and Russian gravestones from the 19th century, dated between 1810 and 1871, totaling, as CHW claims, 35 gravestones at the time of destruction. They contained information about Armenian families and craftsmen, Russian military personnel, doctors, civil servants, and representatives of the administration who lived there in the 19th century.

One of the graves belonged to Sofia Regina Reander, born in Moscow and presumably from the family of a well-known German scholar, another grave belonged to the commander of the 42nd Jaeger Regiment, who defended Shusha in 1826, Vladimir Mikhailov.

On the cemetery grounds, CHW notes, there were also five Armenian khachkars that were created several centuries before the 19th-century burials.

The organization linked the destruction of the cemetery to the construction of a facility for rainwater and wastewater treatment.

It should be noted that in December 2025, Azerbaijani analysts, commenting on data about vandalism in monasteries located in Karabakh, stated that Christian monuments in Azerbaijan are protected by the state.
