The administration of the correctional institution is seeking to tighten the regime for Nijad Ibrahim.

Azerbaijani activist Nijad Ibrahim may be transferred to a closed-type prison for three years at the initiative of the leadership of correctional institution No. 10. His wife and lawyer called the grounds for tightening the regime fabricated.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", in July 2025, a court in Baku sentenced activist Nijad Ibrahim to 6.5 years in prison. He did not plead guilty, and the defense appealed the verdict. On October 6, 2025, the appellate court upheld the sentence. On July 1, the activist's wife, Parvin Ibrahim, stated that the activist had not been in contact with his family for more than 25 days. The defense managed to confirm the transfer of the activist to a punishment cell, but the Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijan did not explain the reasons for the punishment. The activist's lawyer, Nijad Ibrahim, managed to meet with him in the colony 26 days after he stopped communicating with his family. Ibrahim stated that he did not violate the rules and does not know the reasons for his placement in the punishment cell.

In Azerbaijan, the leadership of correctional institution No. 10 prepared a petition to the court to tighten the punishment regime for activist Nijad Ibrahim and transfer him to a closed-type prison, his wife reported. The appeal was sent to the Narimanov District Court, added Parvin Ibrahimova. According to the woman, her husband has been held in a punishment cell for more than a month.

"The petition claims that Nijad grossly 'violates the internal regulations of the institution', 'starts fights', and so on. Of course, all of this is a lie and a fabricated excuse. Activists and opposition members have previously been sent to a closed prison regime under various pretexts. One was blamed for 'not doing sports', another for 'not cleaning up after himself'," she noted.

The activist's wife emphasized that Nijad Ibrahim has repeatedly faced provocations in the correctional institution.

In her opinion, "the prolonged detention of the activist in a punishment cell and the ban on communication with his family give reason to believe that the plan to tighten the conditions of detention was prepared in advance."

"It was clear that something bad would happen in the end. We already suspected that he might be transferred to a closed prison regime. And it happened. It hurts to see such cruelty from this government towards its citizens. How can one be so ruthless? It is not enough for them to slander an innocent person and steal years of his life — they want to inflict even more suffering by placing him in a closed prison," said Parvin Ibrahimova.

Lawyer Zibeyda Sadigova confirmed that a petition was sent to the court for the transfer of Nijad Ibrahim to a closed prison for three years.

According to her, in a closed prison, the inmate is in greater isolation. Unlike the colony, the inmate is kept in a single or double cell for almost the entire day, only receiving an hour of outdoor exercise, and has fewer phone calls and visits with relatives.

According to her, the defense will insist on rejecting the petition from the colony due to its groundlessness.
