An attempt to evict residents of a dormitory in Nalchik resulted in a criminal case.

A case of abuse of authority is being investigated in connection with an attempt to evict former employees of the Nalchik Agricultural University from their dormitory.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," last June, the management of the Kabardino-Balkarian State Agrarian University notified former employees living in the university dormitory since 1987 of their eviction without providing alternative housing. The former university employees appealed to the authorities complaining that the university's management had served them with eviction notices. According to them, appeals to the rector and government agencies have yielded no results.

A criminal case has been opened in Kabardino-Balkaria following an attempt to evict former employees of the Nalchik Agricultural University from their dormitory, the regional Investigative Committee and the prosecutor's office reported.

"According to investigators, in February 2026, 47 families living in the educational institution's dormitory, former employees of the Kabardino-Balkarian State Agrarian University, received notices to vacate their living quarters. The citizens were dismissed in 2017 due to staff reductions and continued to live in the university dormitory. The elimination of the housing waiting list, blocking the citizens' exit from the courtyard, as well as the actions of the educational institution's management, which ignored their requests, created unbearable conditions for "residence," the Investigative Committee's Directorate for Kabardino-Balkaria reported.

Investigators have opened a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 286 of the Russian Criminal Code (abuse of authority).

The Kabardino-Balkaria Prosecutor's Office also noted that it had launched an investigation.

As a reminder, KBGAU Rector Zaurbi Shkhagapsoev previously told a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he was forced to evict people from the dormitory because the students had nowhere to live. "They've already been living there for 30-40 years without any legal basis. So where am I supposed to house the students?" - he asked.
